Located on the Bolaven Plateau in Southern Laos, Bolaven Farms is taking advantage of the incredible climate conditions for cultivating coffee, all while helping to build a future for some of Asia’s poorest children. The Bolaven Plateau is uniquely perfect for growing coffee because of it’s volcanic soil, high elevation, desirable temperature and rainfall. Laotian refugee Sam Say, is the farm’s founder. During the Vietnam War, a 10 year old Say and his family fled Laos for a Thai refugee camp. His family soon moved to Canada, where they were taken in a by a Mennonite church community in Calgary. Later, Say moved to Hong Kong and made a fortune trading carbon steel — a fortune that he now uses to rebuild the high-end coffee industry in Southern Laos. The 67-hectare Bolaven Farms now supports about 40 families, allowing the children to attend school while their parents complete training programs to become self-sufficient farmers. The deal includes ownership of a plot they can bequeath to their children, and all the children living there are now well-fed and disease free. Lao coffee from the Bolaven Plateau delighted Parisians a century ago. Bolaven Farms improves that heritage with a 100% organic integrated farming system to satisfy discerning coffee lovers today.

- NOTES -
Barefoot Coffee was born in 2003 from the idea of treating coffee as a culinary art. Just like great produce at your local farmers market, their coffees are offered in season and fresh from the farm, when they are at their most delicious. They roast to order in small batches, allowing them to highlight origin character versus roast character so you can experience the uniqueness of each coffee’s terrior. They travel to origin to find the most conscientious producers and hand select the coffees that take their breath away. Most of their harvests are purchased from farmers they have known personally for many years. By sourcing the best beans and hand-crafting each roast, they extract flavors like banana split sundae, guava, chocolate ganache, cola berry, and thick dollops of plum molasses.
